Description
Planning grant: in order to advance college, career, and civic readiness in the maryland, DC, and delaware (mid-atlantic) region by strengthening P20 (K12-higher education) partnerships, campus compact mid-atlantic (ccma) proposes to research all aspects of an americorps program that would build an affiliate region of the internationally acclaimed peacejam program. This would include introducing peacejam academic curricula in K12 schools, providing an annual peacejam youth conference hosted by a nobel peace prize winner, and building a leadership and service program on multiple college campuses that will address the cncs focus areas of education and economic opportunity. Peacejam provides a broad range of educational programs focused on the work of nobel peace laureates that foster academic performance and build compassionate leaders. All peacejam participants engage in evidence-informed high-quality academic service-learning. Research from the peacejam national evaluation indicates that youth participating in peacejam score higher in measures of academic and civic engagement and standardized tests than their non-participating peers. The ccma project will partner with the peacejam foundation, headquartered in colorado with affiliates throughout the united states and in forty countries around the world. The cncs investment of $74,704.20 in public funding will be matched with $23,415.59 in match funding ($10,930 private / $12,536.59 public). No americorps members will be needed to execute this plan as this will be the planning grant year. Actions planned include researching successful americorps programs; maintaining a diverse planning team; working closely with cncs program officers; partnering with state service commissions; recruiting university/college partners; recruiting K12 curriculum partners; and developing a comprehensive plan for orientation, training and support of americorps members.
