The Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Assistance awarded the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation $546,353 on October 1, 2025, under the Tribal Youth Program (CFDA 16.731) to deliver culturally based prevention, intervention, and treatment services for at-risk American Indian and Alaska Native youth.

The PBPN Wellness Connections Program integrates traditional Potawatomi ways of being with evidence-based therapeutic interventions to address significant gaps in youth-focused behavioral health and mental health services within the nation. The program targets elevated rates of suicidality, substance use, and poor mental health outcomes among tribal youth by promoting resilience and fostering positive well-being.

Performance runs through September 30, 2030, with work conducted in Mayetta, Kansas. The Tribal Youth Program supports tribal efforts to prevent and reduce juvenile delinquency, develop Tribal Youth Healing to Wellness Courts, and strengthen juvenile justice system response for American Indian and Alaska Native youth.

PBPN currently faces a significant GAP in youth-focused behavioral health and mental health services, contributing to elevated rates of suicidality, substance use, and poor mental health outcomes. To address these challenges, the PBPN youth wellness program will integrate traditional potawatomi ways of being with evidence-based therapeutic interventions, promoting resilience and fostering positive well-being among tribal youth.
