The Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Assistance awarded the Poarch Band of Creek Indians $241,442 on October 1, 2025, under the Tribal Justice Assistance program (CFDA 16.596) to renovate and expand a sober living facility on the Poarch Creek Indian Reservation in Atmore, Alabama.
The Poarch Band of Creek Indians will renovate an existing six-bed sober living facility that opened in June 2022 to add two step-down rooms for program graduates, one isolation room for residents experiencing illness, additional bathrooms, and a generator for facility power during outages. The facility currently serves residents in a one-year recovery program with access to counseling services and community reentry support, and operates as a hub for support groups, Narcotics Anonymous, and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. The tribe expanded capacity from six to ten beds in August 2024 but continues to operate under demand constraints; the renovations will improve living and participation conditions for people in recovery.
The award period runs through September 30, 2030. The Tribal Justice Assistance program supports critical needs of tribal justice systems to prevent crime and ensure tribal safety through development and implementation of initiatives that strengthen tribal justice system capacity to reduce crime.
