About this award

The Pueblo of Sandia, a federally recognized American Indian tribe in New Mexico, was awarded a $482,743 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance (CFDA 16.596 Tribal Justice Assistance Program). The funding will help the tribe develop, support, and enhance its adult tribal justice system, and assist in the prevention of opioid, alcohol, and other substance abuse-related crimes. Specifically, the grant will allow the Pueblo of Sandia to expand its behavioral health program by providing evidence-based, trauma-informed intensive outpatient treatment, behavioral activation, aftercare planning, and peer mentorship services. The tribe will also offer parenting classes and substance abuse support groups to serve its approximately 427 tribal members. The overall goal is to create a culture of sobriety and reduce the high recidivism rate in New Mexico, which was 49.1% in 2023. The five-year grant period runs from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2028.
