The new station will provide the RCPD with sufficient office space, evidence processing, interviewing rooms, case file storage, and other essential administrative and operational capabilities required to effectively and safely serve the tribal community. This project aims to address the critical infrastructure needs of the RCPD in response to rising drug activity and crime in the Red Cliff community. The grant has an award date of October 1, 2023 and a targeted completion date of September 30, 2028.
Description
The red cliff band of lake superior chippewa (red cliff) is a federally recognized indian tribe under a constitution adopted april 18, 1936, and approved june 1, 1936, pursuant to the indian reorganization act. As a sovereign nation, the red cliff community and governing tribal council have identified public safety, community services, and support services as top priorities. The primary public safety problem facing the red cliff community is a serious rise in drug activity. Due to the rise in drug use in this community, there is an urgent need for a consistent law enforcement presence to provide for public safety, community policing, and the control of crime and illegal drug traffic. However, the red cliff police department (RCPD) has vastly outgrown the facility that currently serves as the police station and requires a purpose-dedicated space with adequate room for offices and equipment storage; the space should be designed to ensure officer safety as well as confidentiality for community members. To perform their essential duties with the highest level of effectiveness, safety, and confidentiality, thercpd requires a dedicated station with sufficient office space, official evidence processing and receiving room, interviewing room, case file storage, and administrative space. The tribe will use the construction of a new modular police station for the RCPD. The new police station will provide the necessary space and fulfill these needs. This project ensures that the RCPD will have the appropriate facilities from which to provide essential community policing and related services effectively and safely to the red cliff community and visitors.
