About this award
The Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women awarded the Northern Cheyenne Tribe $535,000 on January 1, 2026, under the Tribal Sexual Assault Services Program (CFDA 16.024) to maintain and enhance sexual assault services on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation through December 31, 2028. The Healing Hearts Program, an agency of the Tribe, will deliver intervention, advocacy, and support services to sexual assault victims, including emergency clothing, housing, toiletries, and transportation. Performance occurs in Lame Deer, Montana, on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in Rosebud and Big Horn Counties in southeastern Montana. This is a new award. The Tribal Sexual Assault Services Program funds projects that create, maintain, and expand sustainable sexual assault services provided by tribes, tribal organizations, and nonprofit tribal organizations within Indian Country and Alaska Native Villages. The program supports intervention, advocacy, accompaniment, support services, and related assistance for adult, youth, and child victims of sexual assault; non-offending family and household members of victims; and those collaterally affected by sexual assault.
Description
IT is one of five grant programs funded within the sexual assault services program (sasp). Sasp was created by the violence against women and department of justice reauthorization act of 2005 (vawa 2005) and is the first federal funding stream dedicated solely to the provision of direct intervention and related assistance for victims of sexual assault. Overall, the purpose of sasp is to provide intervention, advocacy, accompaniment (e.g., accompanying victims to court, medical facilities, police departments), support services, and related assistance for adult, youth, and child victims of sexual assault, non-offending family and household members of victims, and those collaterally affected by the sexual assault. Tsasp supports projects to create, maintain, and expand sustainable sexual assault services provided by tribes, tribal organizations, and nonprofit tribal organizations within indian country and alaska native villages. The northern cheyenne tribe (NCT) is a federally recognized tribe located in rural rosebud and big horn counties in southeastern montana. The healing hearts program is an agency of the tribe that provides services to victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, elder abuse, and child abuse. With this funding, the NCT will maintain and enhance services to sexual assault victims on the northern cheyenne indian reservation including but not limited to emergency clothing, housing, toiletries, and transportation. This is a new award.
