About this award
The Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women awarded the Fort Peck Assiniboine & Sioux Tribes $540,000 on January 1, 2026, under the Tribal Sexual Assault Services Program (CFDA 16.024) to expand sexual assault services through the Red Bird Woman Center, an agency of the tribe's government.
The Red Bird Woman Center will deliver 24/7 crisis intervention, case management, advocacy, and court accompaniment for sexual assault survivors. These services are trauma-informed and victim-centered, targeting adult, youth, and child victims of sexual assault and their family and household members affected by sexual assault. This is a new project.
The award funds work performed in Poplar, Montana, with a period of performance from January 1, 2026, through December 31, 2028. The Tribal Sexual Assault Services Program supports projects to create, maintain, and expand sustainable sexual assault services provided by tribes, tribal organizations, and nonprofit tribal organizations within Indian Country and Alaska Native Villages. It is one of five grant programs within the broader Sexual Assault Services Program (SASP), which was created by the Violence Against Women and Department of Justice Reauthorization Act of 2005 and represents the first federal funding stream dedicated solely to direct intervention and related assistance for sexual assault victims.

IT is one of five grant programs funded within the sexual assault services program (sasp). Sasp was created by the violence against women and department of justice reauthorization act of 2005 (vawa 2005) and is the first federal funding stream dedicated solely to the provision of direct intervention and related assistance for victims of sexual assault. Tsasp supports projects to create, maintain, and expand sustainable sexual assault services provided by tribes, tribal organizations, and nonprofit tribal organizations within indian country and alaska native villages. The fort peck assiniboine and sioux tribe is a federally recognized tribe located in poplar, montana. The red bird woman center, an agency of the fort peck assiniboine & sioux tribal government, works to address violence against indian women by providing comprehensive victim services.
