Description

SASP was created by the violence against women and department of justice reauthorization act of 2005 (vawa 2005) and is the first federal funding stream dedicated solely to the provision of direct intervention and related assistance for victims of sexual assault. Overall, the purpose of SASP is to provide intervention, advocacy, accompaniment (e.g., accompanying victims to court, medical facilities, police departments), support services, and related assistance for adult, youth, and child victims of sexual assault, non-offending family and household members of victims, and those collaterally affected by the sexual assault. TSASP supports projects to create, maintain, and expand sustainable sexual assault services provided by tribes, tribal organizations, and nonprofit tribal organizations within indian country and alaska native villages. With this funding, the kalispel indian tribe (KTI) has two reservations one of which is rural, with an average population density of four people per square mile, in USK, pend oreille county, washington, and one of which is urban, in airway heights, spokane county, washington. Ktvas also serves surrounding environs including services to the fairchild united states airforce, and an additional two satellite offices in the small rural town of ione, WA, and the college town of cheney, WA for services to the city of cheney and eastern washington university, with advocates on site once per week, respectively. Through TSASP funding, KTI will be able to enhance and expand existing services for victims and survivors of sexual assault in the urban spokane and west plains region of spokane county, WA. This will be done by: 1. Hiring one full time sexual assault advocate to provide crisis intervention and emergency services, advocacy and referrals; 2. Develop materials to provide resources to spread awareness and support to survivors of sexual assault; and 3. Manage the emergency hotline as a shared responsibility with other programming at KTI. This awardwill be a three-year project.
