The Municipality of Anchorage has been awarded a $1,934,206 Project Grant from the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Clean Ports Program (CFDA #66.051) to support emissions reduction and clean energy transition activities at the Port of Alaska. Specifically, the funding will enable the municipality to:
Conduct a baseline emissions inventory, assess clean energy alternatives, and develop an energy transition plan for the port
Evaluate technology deployment scenarios and perform a safety analysis for the use of hydrogen equipment
Engage with port stakeholders and conduct a workforce development needs assessment
Key subrecipients supporting this work include the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, GTI Energy, and Launch Alaska. This project aims to improve understanding of port-related emissions, establish a plan for replacing fossil fuel equipment, identify clean energy alternatives, assess climate risks, and increase community engagement in port planning efforts. The award period extends from December 1, 2024 to November 30, 2027.
