The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 5 awarded Lenawee Conservation District $937,691 under the Geographic Programs - Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (CFDA 66.469) on July 1, 2025, to enhance nutrient management efforts among Michigan farmers in the Western Lake Erie Basin (WLEB) watershed. The project, which extends through March 31, 2029, will deliver technical assistance and educational services designed to reduce phosphorus runoff and improve water quality. Primary deliverables include hosting approximately 25 training and information sessions for farmers and agricultural retailers, and establishing nutrient management plans covering 20,000 new acres through collaborative engagement with agricultural retailers to develop and implement phosphorus management strategies.
The initiative is expected to generate measurable environmental outcomes, including increased knowledge and awareness of nutrient management practices across the agricultural community in the WLEB region and an estimated annual reduction of 20,600 pounds of phosphorus loading to Lake Erie. The intended beneficiaries encompass the agricultural community and residents in Lenawee, Hillsdale, Monroe, and Washtenaw Counties, Michigan. No sub-awards are included in this assistance agreement, and the project will be performed entirely within Michigan.
