The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 5 awarded a $400,000 Project Grant under the Geographic Programs - Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (CFDA 66.469) to the Alliance of Rouge Communities (ARC), a non-profit organization based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The grant will fund the creation of 4 acres of wetland habitat adjacent to the Middle Rouge River in the City of Westland, Michigan, within the Rouge River Area of Concern. The project aims to address three beneficial use impairments: loss of fish and wildlife habitat, degradation of fish and wildlife populations, and degradation of benthos. Key deliverables include a Quality Assurance Project Plan, design plans and technical specifications, a wetland summary, a threatened and endangered species summary, and permit applications. The project will enhance and restore 700 feet of stream, including wetlands, wet meadows, riparian areas, and forests, benefiting the local community that lives, recreates, or works in the Rouge River area.
