Description

This project will work cooperatively with the local drainage districts as well as the oneida tribe to reestablish riparian habitat in the lower FOX river basin by improving standard district drains to 2-stage ditches. By restoring in channel riparian habitat, channels will be able to better attenuate in stream phosphorous loads. The project will also incorporate natural shoreline stabilization techniques to repair significant bank erosion in 2 identified reaches, reducing excessive nutrient loads from these sites. Activities: the project will implement up to 10,825 feet of 2-stage ditching throughout the grant lifetime, as identified by the outagamie county drainage board and in cooperation with the oneida tribe. Outcomes: by restoring in channel riparian habitat, reestablished vegetation will be able to better attenuate in stream phosphorous and sediment loads, and in the future make removal of accumulated sediment from the bench areas of the 2 stage ditches easier during low flow periods, causing less disturbance of the channel, thus reducing a source of legacy accumulated particulate phosphorus from RE-suspending. The project will result in a 12% reduction (542.8 LBS/year) in total P annually for the two-stage ditches and a reduction of at least 24.7 LBS of P annually and 20.6 tons of TSS annual for the stream stabilization portions of the project. Primary beneficiaries include the oneida nation and the town of vandenbroek. Subrecipient: no subawards are included in this assistance agreement.
