Description
This will be achieved by extending the currently running citizen science project solar jet hunter on zooniverse. The resulting catalogue of jets will be used to derive the jet distributions in size and duration. The science team will estimate the thermal energy content of jets in these distributions. In a new workflow of the citizen science project volunteers will use time-distance plots prepared by the science team to calculate the jet speeds projected in the plane-of-sky. These measurements will be used to estimate the kinetic energy of solar jets. Observations from the interface region imaging spectrograph (IRIS) will be analyzed by citizen scientists: the volunteers will be asked to annotate IRIS observations previously tagged by IRIS scientists as containing one or several jets. A subset of these jets will be used for a more detailed scientific analysis using the spectroscopic diagnostics of IRIS. A new workflow in the citizen science project will be dedicated to the identification of jet counterparts in coronagraph observations from the solar and heliospheric observatory (SOHO) to determine which jets lead to significant mass ejection beyond 1.5 solar radii. Finally another workflow will be dedicated to the identification of type III radio bursts associated in time with the identified jets in the radio observations from wind and the solar terrestrial relations observatory (STEREO). This will be used to estimate how often jets participate in a significant input of energetic particles in the heliosphere. All the data to be used in this project are publicly available.
