About this award
The National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Guam $3.388 million under the Hatch Act formula grant program on October 1, 2025, to conduct agricultural research.
The University of Guam's AgInnovation Research Center will perform more than ten research projects in fiscal year 2026 spanning horticulture, aquaculture, food science, conservation of genetic diversity for important food crops, human nutrition, integrated pest management, natural resource conservation, natural products chemistry, plant health, soil management, and related topics. Research will be conducted across three experiment stations, a hatchery, nine laboratories, and other facilities. The work involves research faculty, associates, assistants, agriculture technicians, students, and support personnel collaborating with the university's Cooperative Extension and Outreach to incorporate input from farmers and community stakeholders. Projects address sustainable food and agricultural systems, natural resource management, invasive species, landscape resiliency, food science and nutrition, and community development. Performance occurs in Guam with a period of performance from October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2027. Under the Hatch Act formula allocation mechanism, funds must be fully expended in the fiscal year of appropriation; up to 100 percent may carry over for one year after the end of the fiscal year with no prior approval required.
