About this award
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Vermont & State Agricultural College $2,973,954 under the Payments to Agricultural Experiment Stations Under the Hatch Act (CFDA 10.203) on October 1, 2025, for a period of performance through September 30, 2027, with work performed in Burlington, Vermont.
The award funds agricultural research conducted through the Vermont Agricultural Experiment Station across six priority areas: animal health, production, and products; development and engagement of communities; foundational and exploratory research in agriculture; long-term viability of Vermont agriculture, food, and forests; nutritional value, food security, and food safety; and quality of the natural environment. The station disseminates science-based research findings to Vermont citizens, communities, and organizations to increase knowledge and skills and encourage implementation of cost-effective practices, with particular focus on industries associated with the working landscape including food systems supply chains and the recreation economy.
As a formula grant under the Hatch Act, this award is allocated to Vermont's designated state agricultural experiment station according to the statutory formula. Funds are expected to be fully expended in the fiscal year of appropriation; up to 100 percent may be carried over for up to one year after the year for which they were appropriated without prior approval.
Description
As the only research university in the state, and as a land-grant institution, we are charged with integrating higher education, research, and extension to meet the needs of vermont citizens, communities, and organizations. We accomplish this in part with research conducted through the vermont agricultural experiment station (AES) that focuses on contemporary problems, needs, and challenges of our state and region. Our efforts support industries associated with the working landscape, from food systems supply chains to the recreation economy. From economic development to biosecurity, we follow the needs of our communities and stakeholders and rely on the expertise of our faculty and staff to meet them. We have therefore identified six areas within which we conduct our transdisciplinary work: 1. Animal health, production, and products; 2. Development and engageme NT of communities; 3. Foundational and exploratory research in agriculture; 4. Long-term viability of vermont agriculture, food, and forests; 5. Nutritional value, food security, and food safety; and 6. Quality of the natural environment. VT-AES addresses these critical issues facing vermont by conducting research and disseminating essential current science-based information to a broad range of audiences. This increases their knowledge and skills and encourages implementation of cost-effective practices
