About this award

The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded South Dakota State University $4,859,438 under the Hatch Act formula grant program (CFDA 10.203) on October 1, 2025.

The award funds integrated, field-tested agricultural research translated to producer-ready decisions across crop and soil systems, livestock and meat systems, and dairy and food processing. Crop and soil systems work advances breeding and genetics for stress tolerance and pest resistance; develops rapid diagnostics, resistance mapping, and integrated pest management playbooks; builds soil health networks testing cover crops, reduced tillage, and bio-based amendments; improves irrigation and water-soil dynamics through deficit and variable-rate strategies and salinity management; and expands specialty-crop opportunities through seed biology and horticultural systems. Livestock and meat systems research focuses on precision nutrition, health, reproduction, and growth physiology; grazing and crop-livestock integration linking rangeland condition to enterprise profit; and meat science to enhance carcass quality, food safety, and value-added processing. Dairy and food processing research addresses shelf-life and safety gains and automation and analytics to overcome labor bottlenecks.

The award period runs from October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2027, with performance at Brookings, South Dakota. The Hatch Act program assists State Agricultural Experiment Stations in conducting agricultural research programs addressing farming, food, natural resources, forests, and related areas, with at least 25 percent of funds directed to multistate collaborative projects. Funds are expected to be fully expended in the fiscal year of appropriation, with up to 100 percent carryover permitted for up to one year thereafter without prior approval.

Description

Agriculture, forestry, and related industries contributed about 32.1B in output, supported nearly 130,000 jobs, and accounted for roughly 14% of the state's GDP. The scale and volatility that producers face underscore the need for research focused on stabilizing yields, strengthening processes, and growing rural prosperity. Producers operate from the semi-arid west river to the sub-humid east river, managing droughts, intense storms, late freezes, elevated input and labor costs, and shifting global markets. Water availability and quality, soil health, and emerging animal-health risks demand locally validated practices, while processors seek shelf-life and safety gains and farms need automation and analytics to overcome labor bottlenecks. South dakota state university responds with integrated, field-tested science that translates to producer-ready decisions, organized around key priorities. Crop and soil systems work advances breeding and genetics for stress tolerance, pest resistance, and grain and forage quality; supports public-private pipelines; develops rapid diagnostics, resistance mapping, and IPM playbooks; builds soil health networks testing cover crops, reduced tillage, manure, and BIO-based amendments with nutrient-use efficiency guidelines; improves irrigation and water-soil dynamics through deficit and variable-rate strategies and salinity management, and expands specialty-crop opportunities through seed biology and horticultural systems. Livestock and meat systems research focuses on precision nutrition, health, reproduction, and growth physiology to lift efficiency and performance, grazing and crop-livestock integration that links rangeland condition to enterprise profit and risk; and met science to enhance carcass quality, food safety, and value-added processing from pasture to plant. Dairy and food innovation efforts target dairy cattle health and production, leverage an on-campus pilot plant for ingredient and process development, and improve, including BIO-based, packaging that extends shelf-life and reduces water use, and provide workforce development aligned to regional processor needs. Wildlife, rangeland, and environmental stewardship programs emphasize long-term rangeland monitoring, invasive-species control, endangered-species assessments, biodiversity baselines, and riparian and habitat prescriptions that align conservation with production and regulation. Precision agriculture, sensing, and automation research validates sensors, variable rate systems, and robotics in real-farm conditions and builds digital twins and decision tools that integrate agronomics, weather, and economics to target inputs and reduce variability. Water resources and environmental engineering work advances watershed nutrient and sediment accounting, remote sensing, and modeling for nutrients and oil moisture. Bison, range beef, and west river systems research addresses bison and COW-calf health, grading, and drought-ready forage strategies tailored to semi-arid risk profiles, along with enterprise economics and risk playbook for variable precipitation and markets. Expected outcomes include scientific advancement through new varieties, diagnostics, management practices, and validated tools; profitability and cost control via higher yields, better product quality, improved feed conversion, and more precisely targeted inputs; risk reduction through better timing of field and her operations and reduced drift, weather, and disease losses; stronger natural resources via more efficient water and nutrient use, healthier soils resilient rangelands and improved habitats; and a workforce of practice ready graduates and technicians trained in science-based applications.
