Description

Mississippi state university (MSU) extension meets this challenge with a broad spectrum of programming designed to reach these diverse audiences. Creation and transfer of knowledge to solve problems are at the core of these efforts. With smith-lever funding, MSU extension's goal is to improve the economic, social, and cultural well-being of mississippians in all 82 counties. To do this, MSU extension's work addresses five critical issues: 1) enhancing the viability and sustainability of mississippi's diverse agriculture to ensure food security, safety, and quality; 2) growing vibrant, successful, and sustainable mississippi communities and businesses; 3) improving the lives of youth through positive 4-H youth development to build mississippi's future; 4) strengthening and sustaining mississippi families to facilitate healthy outcomes and well-being; and 5) sustaining mississippi's natural resources and environment and promoting sustainable energy. Both comprehensive and focused needs assessments are conducted to inform overarching system-wide efforts. Based on the information obtained from formal and informal needs assessment processes (e.g., advisory councils, surveys, research/statistics), MSU extension uses direct and indirect delivery methods to reach its clients. Direct education occurs through virtual and face-to face workshops, classes, group discussions, one-on-one technical assistance, demonstrations, field days, and other types of educational presentations. Indirect education methods include newsletters, social media, reports and journal publications, public service announcements, and websites. By using the latest technology and teaching techniques to serve clients, developing and using volunteers to help disseminate programs and information, cooperating with other groups and agencies, and maintaining a culturally diverse staff, MSU extension is responsive to the needs of various audiences at all socioeconomic levels to achieve our expected outcomes -- increased knowledge, improved practices, and changed conditions -- by providing research and education in a practical and applicable way in the areas of agriculture and natural resources, 4-H youth development, family and consumer science education, and community resource and economic development.
