Description
Annual appropriations under the hatch and mcintire-stennis acts, in combination with university of maine funds, provide the base funding for research programs of the station. The research capacity provided by base funding leverages additional funding from competitive grants and contracts and industry support. Hatch funds are used at the maine agricultural and forest experiment station to support research on all aspects of agriculture spanning a range of current critical issues in plant and animal production, protection and health; soil and water conservation and use; forestry; environment and natural resources; processing, distribution, safety, marketing and utilization of food and agricultural products; fisheries and aquaculture; home economics and family life; human nutrition; rural and community development; resource economics and policy; tourism; and biotechnology. The maine agricultural and forest experiment station will use administrative hatch funds to support the research program administration and financial recordkeeping and reportin G activities required by the federal regulations that govern the expenditure of hatch funds. The station has over 80 research projects in the hatch program. Typically, each hatch project will have several associated projects or activities supported by competitive grants or other sources. The station director will facilitate development of new hatch projects, approve new projects, and monitor all approved projects including integrated grants and contracts. An allotment of hatch funds will be made to pay expenditures of a general administrative nature, including partial funding for salaries, travel, and other items related to planning, coordination, oversight, reporting, and compliance of the hatch agricultural research program of the maine agricultural and forest experiment station
