The college of veterinary medicine is accredited by the avma council on education. UTCVM serves the land grant mission by advancing animal and human health through teaching, research, and service. Strategies to achieve these goals focus on the professional DVM and graduate degree (PHD, MS) programs, furthering our agricultural and biomedical research efforts and P roviding effective outreach to veterinarians, livestock producers, and society. We deliver a strong foundation of animal health and biomedical knowledge, preparing students for life-long learning. The college has a broad base of research activity in infectious disease, diagnostic testing, parasitic and vector-borne diseases, genomics, cancer biology, regenerative medicine, rehabilitative sciences, and immunology. The college invests in people to advance research and clinical programs. The college provides valuable outreach to the state through its ambulatory field services, consultations with the commissioner of agriculture, state veterinarian, state diagnostic laboratory, and partnering groups. UTCVM's outreach programs connect with individuals and producers throughout the year. The UTCVM has numerous internationally recognized researchers, clinicians, and leaders in population and clinical specialty fields. CVM infrastructure includes excellent research and diagnostic laboratories. Supporting technology includes modern web-conferencing, computer support, lecture capture, on-line courses. The college advances animal, human and environmental health through its centers: center of excellence in livestock diseases and human health and the utia genomics center for the advancement of agriculture. These centers are committed to the advancement of agriculture by developing new strategies for improvement of productivity and sustainability of food systems. The UT one health initiative promotes research and education to ensure the health and sustainability of the planet. Our ties to tennessee agriculture are exceptionally strong and we benefit greatly by our academic, extension, and research ties with the university of tennessee institute of agriculture. The college uses an external advisory board to inform stakeholders and gain feedback related to mission priorities and implementation. USDA nifa 1433 formula funds are awarded to faculty through a rigorous, internal competitive award process. The peer review panel is made up of members of the CVM research committee. Each member critically reviews grant proposals and assigns scores using an assessment rubric. Then, the review panel discusses the merits and concerns for each grant in committee. The committee makes recommendation to the associate dean for research, who serves as the panel manager, and ultimately selects grants to be awarded. Results are shared at research day, an annual event that presents research in both on-line and on-site forums.
