Description
- Activities
- In the university of nebraska? Lincoln (UNL) institute of agriculture and natural resources (IANR), we are all about people and the food, water and natural resources that sustain them. IANR innovation in research, teaching, and extension education places nebraska on the leading edge of food production, environmental stewardship, human nutrition, business development, and youth engagement. Composed of the college of agricultural sciences and natural resources (CASNR), the agricultural research division (ARD), nebraska extension, and the ARD and extension components of three departments in the college of education and human sciences; IANR is committed to growing the future of nebraska's people, businesses, and communities. IANR strives to combine research, teaching and extension in a multidisciplinary, collaborative environment that encourages the best thinking and expertise from across the university and private enterprise to ensure nebraska's competitiveness in a world of change and challenge. Specific to animal health and disease, IANR research addresses health and disease problems that exist preslaughter or pre?collection of animal products (pre?harvest). Animal health and disease research comprises basic and applied studies on infectious and noninfectious agents which impair the normal state of the living animal body and/or that affect the performance of vital functions. This includes research to improve the health of domestic livestock, poultry, aquatic animals and other income producing animals and to facilitate the effective prevention of diseases in both domesticated and wild animals which, if not controlled, would endanger the livestock and poultry industries. Also included is research to minimize transportation and handling losses; monitor the suitability of animals and animal products for human use; protect public health through control of animal diseases transmissible to humans and improve methods of controlling the reproduction of predators. Investigations of metabolic diseases and reproductive diseases including endocrine dysfunctions such as anestrus are included. Deliverables and expected outcomes: deliverables and expected outcomes from active animal health projects include the following: 1. Generate alternative molecular, genomic, diagnostic solutions to decrease susceptibility to major swine viruses, improve general fitness and disease resilience and reduce economic losses to livestock producers. 2. Enhance our understanding of host?pathogen interactions at the cellular level, and to determine differences in strains of bacteria that correlate more (or less) with animal disease. 3. New generation of one?health safe vaccines against BTB, covid?19 and babesiosis. For a comprehensive list of all outcomes, we welcome the review of IANR's annual report of accomplishments and results.
- Intended beneficiaries
- As nebraska's residents are the primary beneficiaries and stakeholders, there is an ongoing, two?way dialogue to ensure that ianr's priorities reflect the needs of the state.
