About this award

The Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 8 awarded the Nevada Department of Wildlife $727,548 under the Wildlife Restoration and Basic Hunter Education and Safety program (CFDA 15.611) on December 1, 2025, with performance through June 30, 2027.

The award funds Nevada's hunter education program, which educates new hunters in firearms safety, ethics, regulations, and game care and maintains a cadre of 200–300 volunteer hunter education instructors statewide. The award also supports the Pittman-Robertson modernization program to promote safe hunting and recreational shooting through archery education, the National Archery in the Schools Program, species-specific workshops, and hunting techniques training. Funding supplements public shooting range expansion and facility improvements across Nevada to increase live fire training opportunities in hunter education classes and general participation in shooting sports.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife passed through a sub-award to the City of Ely on May 22, 2026, to improve hunter education and shooting sports availability in that area, including winter and summer course delivery, range safety improvements, and accessible facilities for participants with special needs.

Description

The primary purpose of nevadas hunter education program is to educate new hunters in firearms safety, ethics, regulations, and game care which will make them safer and more responsible when going afield. In addition to providing the accompanying support and training to maintain a cadre of 200-300 diverse, trained, knowledgeable, motivated volunteer hunter education instructors statewide. The primary purpose of ndows pittman-robertson modernization program is to promote safe hunting and recreational shooting.enhanced hunter education programming includes ndows archery education programs, national archery in the schools program (nasp) and various species specific and hunting techniques workshops. Programming is designed to educate both new and existing hunters shooters on additional hunting and shooting opportunities to become proficient in various shooting sports, hunting techniques and skills. The state continues to have a need for more quality, clean, family friendly public shooting ranges. With the expansion and facility improvements of existing public ranges and the possibility of opening new public ranges we hope to see an increase in the number of live fire opportunities in our hunter education classes and increased participation in shooting sports and target shooting in general. The federal funding for this project will be used as a supplement for public shooting range related improvements that will benefit the hunter education program. IT will also increase shooting opportunities for hunters and shooters in general.
