Description
Wildlife conservation and management programs use detailed avian demography data to measure health of avian populations which can be used as an indication of overall ecosystem health this is particularly essential for vulnerable island ecosystems like those found in the cnmi the cnmi DFW, in partnership with institute for bird populations IBP proposes to establish a tropical monitoring avian productivity and survival tmaps birdbanding program on rota tmaps is an avian monitoring program that has been widely used across the tropics and was conducted on saipan from 2008 2018 researchers will set up banding stations across the island where they will use mist nets to capture, band and release forest birds morphological measurements like age, SEX, breeding status, weight, wing length, and tail length are recorded for each bird this mist netting and banding process is replicated across several weeks and seasons at each site weather and habitat data at each station will also be recorded and used to characterize habitat use and seasonality of breeding the data collected from this project will be used to help understand important demographic details of forest bird populations like average age of the population, SEX ratio, and survival rates results from this study will help guide our monitoring, conservation and management efforts of forest bird populations on rota, many of which are only found in the cnmi and are endemic to the island
