About this award

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) awarded Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District (SBMTD) a Formula Grant totaling $4,289,742 on September 5, 2025, under the Federal Transit Formula Grants program (CFDA 20.507). The funding supports the rehabilitation of Terminal 2 Phase 2, with completion anticipated by June 30, 2028. The project encompasses modernization and electrification infrastructure improvements, including replacement of the existing operations and maintenance building, installation of bus canopies designed to support photovoltaic panel systems, deployment of electric vehicle charging stations, and installation of emergency backup resiliency measures comprising a generator and battery energy storage system.

The project is expected to deliver operational efficiency gains through capacity relief at SBMTD's Terminal 1 and reduced deadhead miles and hours by positioning buses at Terminal 2 closer to their service routes. These capital improvements will benefit all current transit users and are designed to encourage increased ridership within the Santa Barbara community. SBMTD will directly implement the funded activities and does not intend to subaward any grant funds to subrecipients.
