About this award

This $4,406,666 Formula Grant award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Nonpoint Source Implementation Grants program (CFDA 66.460) supports the State of South Dakota's efforts to implement its nonpoint source management program. The key products and services delivered through this 5-year grant, which began on July 10, 2024, include:

The implementation of best management practices (BMPs) to reduce sediment, nutrient, and bacterial loads in impaired watersheds, such as the Belle Fourche River watershed and South Central watersheds. This includes installing irrigation systems, grazing management systems, riparian and bank stabilization measures, and improved cropping systems. The grant also funds watershed planning, water quality monitoring, and education/outreach activities to promote public understanding of watershed management issues.

Relevant sub-awards were provided to the James River Water Development District and the Belle Fourche River Watershed Partnership, Inc. to carry out specific BMP implementation, monitoring, and data collection efforts within their respective watersheds. These sub-projects aim to address established total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) and restore water quality to meet designated beneficial uses.
