The Ohio Department of Public Safety received a $1.58 million formula grant award from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to support alcohol-impaired driving countermeasures under the Minimum Penalties for Repeat Offenders for Driving While Intoxicated program (CFDA #20.608). The funding period is from October 1, 2022 through September 30, 2026.
Under the grant, the Ohio Department of Public Safety will provide funding to 26 local and county law enforcement agencies across Ohio to support enforcement and public awareness efforts aimed at reducing repeat offenses of driving under the influence (DUI). Sub-awards ranging from $20,000 to $100,000 will support initiatives like sustained enforcement of DUI laws through checkpoints and patrols, as well as public education campaigns. Key sub-awardees include the police departments of Cleveland, Toledo, Akron, and Cincinnati as well as sheriff's offices in Cuyahoga, Franklin, and Hamilton counties. The funding assists Ohio's efforts to comply with requirements to enact and enforce laws targeting repeat DUI offenders.
