About this award

The Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service awarded the Arizona Department of Education $203.444 million in formula grant funding on October 1, 2025, under the National School Lunch Program (CFDA 10.555) to support nutritious, low-cost or no-cost lunch services for school children throughout Arizona for the period October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026. The funding enables Arizona to provide reimbursable meals, cash subsidies, and USDA Foods to participating public and nonprofit private schools and residential child care institutions, with school food authorities required to serve lunches meeting Federal meal pattern requirements and offer meals at free or reduced price to eligible children.

The Arizona Department of Education distributed substantially all funding through sub-awards to over 100 local educational agencies, charter schools, child care providers, nonprofit organizations, and educational service centers statewide, with sub-award activity dated July 1, 2026. Named sub-recipients include school districts (Omega Alpha Academy, Wide Ruins Community School Inc., Beaver Creek Elementary School District 026, Mingus Union High School District 04, Oracle School District, Heber-Overgaard Unified School District, Tonto Basin School District 33, and numerous others), charter schools and Imagine network schools serving elementary and secondary students, child care centers and preschools (Little Giants Daycare & Preschool LLC, U3 Academy Child Care Center L.L.C., Small Prints Child Care LLC, and others), and community organizations including A New Leaf Inc., providing emergency shelter and supportive services to homeless populations. Several sub-recipients identified as tribally operated or serving Native American populations received funding, including Moencopi Day School Inc., Chilchinbeto Community School Inc., Hopi Day School, Hunters Point Boarding School, Greasewood Springs Community School Inc., and Cedar Public School District 25. The funding flows to these recipients as pass-through assistance to operate school meal programs serving students across Arizona.
