About this award
This $286,251 Formula Grant award from the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance (CFDA 16.609 - Project Safe Neighborhoods) will support the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts' Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) and Violent Crime Reduction Strategy. The funding will focus on reducing violent crime, including gang-related crimes, firearms trafficking, retaliatory violence, drug-related violence, and crimes involving vulnerable victims, across eight high-crime areas in Massachusetts (Boston, Springfield, Worcester, Brockton, Lawrence, Holyoke, Lowell, and New Bedford). Key activities to be funded include law enforcement operations, crime prevention initiatives, community engagement programs, and analytical efforts to identify and mitigate violent crime drivers. The award will also provide support for reentry services, training, equipment, and youth prevention programs. The Department of Public Safety's Executive Office of Public Safety Division in Boston will serve as the grant recipient and coordinate implementation of the comprehensive, multi-faceted strategy to enhance public safety across the region.
Description
The united states attorneys office for the district of massachusetts project safe neighborhoods (PSN) and violent crime reduction strategy will be focused on reducing violent crime in eight particular geographical areas (e.g. boston, springfield, worcester, brockton, lawrence, holyoke, lowell and new bedford). The focus of PSN will be isolated to organized criminal activity, including gang related crimes; firearms trafficking and firearms-related crimes; persistent retaliatory violence; recidivist violence and repeat offenders; violent drug organizations; violence by illegal immigrants; youth violence and recruitment of juveniles; and violence toward vulnerable victims. The PSN strategy will also focus on dismantling local and transnational criminal organizations regardless of where they operate. In some places, targets in one city may have an impact on violent crime in a neighboring community.for instance, surged enforcement efforts in springfield could impact holyoke while a focus on new bedford could impact fall river and taunton.similarly, more coordinated enforcement of impact players in lawrence could reduce violent crime in haverhill. As done in 2018-2023, the PSN leadership team has allocated funding for reentry, training, law enforcement equipment and software, and youth prevention services for fiscal year 2024.
