About this program
The Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs administers Project Safe Neighborhoods (CFDA 16.609), a formula grant program funding coordinated violent crime reduction strategies in the 94 federal judicial districts, with the most recent grant awards made on October 1, 2024.
The program funds data-driven, multi-agency task forces that combine federal, state, local, tribal, and community partners to reduce gun violence, gang activity, and violent crime in targeted enforcement areas. Recent awards support targeted enforcement against high-risk offenders and criminal organizations; gang task force operations; community engagement and violence prevention initiatives; firearm trafficking investigations and ballistic intelligence networks (NIBIN); reentry and intervention programs for at-risk youth; crime analysis and intelligence-led policing; and overtime for law enforcement in hot-spot areas. Award recipients manage prosecutions, conduct warrant sweeps, implement evidence-based deterrence strategies, and coordinate with local prosecutors and community organizations.
The portfolio is dominated by Formula Grants (78% of awards) with smaller shares of Block Grants (5%) and Project Grants (17%). The Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs funds 1,449 awards valued at $230.7 million federal dollars, and the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Assistance funds 689 awards valued at $146.3 million federal dollars, for a combined total of $377.4 million federal dollars obligated across 2,141 awards since 1999. Awards have been steady at roughly 90 per year over the past five years. Typical award magnitudes range from $74 thousand to $711 thousand, with most awards in the $100 thousand to $300 thousand range. Representative recent awards included funding to the Northern District of West Virginia for gun crime task force operations ($74 thousand), the District of the Virgin Islands for violence reduction coordination ($51 thousand), and the Northern District of Texas for gang enforcement and prosecution across multiple districts ($369 thousand).
An open opportunity (O-BJA-2026-172654, due September 10, 2026) solicits applications for combined FY 2025 and FY 2026 funding under the same formula structure.
