About this award
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 8 awarded the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality a $6.49 million Nonpoint Source Implementation Grants (CFDA 66.460) formula grant effective October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2030. This award supports implementation of North Dakota's Section 319 nonpoint source management program through ten integrated projects targeting water quality impairments caused by polluted runoff. The grant funds a comprehensive range of activities including design and installation of structural and non-structural best management practices (BMPs), watershed planning and monitoring, technology demonstrations, and education and outreach initiatives across multiple watersheds including the Maple River, Wild Rice River, Park River, Antelope Creek, Bowman-Haley, and Red River Basin.
The program delivers tangible water quality improvements and community engagement through ten subawards to local implementing partners, including soil conservation districts (Wild Rice Soil Conservation District, Cass County Soil Conservation District, Richland County Soil Conservation District, Walsh County Three Rivers Soil Conservation District, Burleigh County Soil Conservation District, and Bowman-Slope Soil Conservation District), universities (Valley City State University), state agencies (North Dakota Department of Water Resources), nonprofit organizations (International Water Institute), and educational entities (North Dakota Envirothon). Expected deliverables include project designs, monitoring reports, construction completion reports, and measurable water quality improvements through documented reductions in nutrient, sediment, and pathogen loads. The initiative directly benefits all North Dakota residents through coordinated implementation of agricultural best management practices, farmer mentor programs, nutrient reduction efforts, and environmental education programs including Project WET and the River of Dreams program.
