The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) awarded a $400,000 Cooperative Agreement under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to Biosensics LLC to develop ODALERT, a wearable device for the automatic detection of opioid-induced respiratory arrest. The project aims to address the urgent public health issue of opioid overdoses, which often occur unwitnessed in home settings. ODALERT is designed to continually monitor the user's respiratory patterns and issue alerts to the user and first responders upon detection of respiratory cessation, potentially reducing opioid overdose mortality rates. The project will involve completing the development of the ODALERT sensor, optimizing the device's battery, deploying real-time algorithms, and conducting clinical validation studies with opioid-experienced adults to support a de novo application for FDA approval.
