Description

Abstract
/executive summarythe rate of development and networking across the globe have immensely contributed to the spread of diseases from one country to another. In addition, globalisation facilitates the rapid spread of infectious diseases, whether emerging or RE-emerging. Influenza has been known historically for its pandemic potential and therefore requires active and persistent surveillance. Seasonal, zoonotic and pandemic influenza are the types of influenza outbreaks that occur in humans and animals. The most common among animals is the avian influenza which affects birds. The various subtypes of influenza type a virus (avian and pandemic influenza) have pandemic potentials because of their ability to mutate by antigenic shift, forming new subtypes or strains. The novel virus subtypes usually have chances of spreading globally. Influenza surveillance has a monitoring and information-sharing mechanism worldwide for the evolution of influenza around the world under the auspices of the global influenza surveillance and response system (gisrs), coordinated by the world health organisation (who) global influenza programme (GIP). Nigeria being a member of the gisrs and one of the major exporters of poultry in west africa has been conducting influenza surveillance over the last 14 years.an influenza surveillance system, national influenza sentinel surveillance (niss), was established in 2008 to provide timely epidemiological and virological data to better inform national prevention and control strategies including immunisation. The niss aims to facilitate early detection, notification, assessment, and response to any avian and pandemic influenza outbreaks in nigeria.leveraging the existing niss system in the country, this project will seek to: ?primarily define, characterise and monitor trends of avian and pandemic influenzas and deaths attributable to influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (sari) from september 30 TH, 2021 to september 29TH, 2026; identify locally circulating influenza types, subtypes and strains, and their relationship with the global and regional patterns between september 30TH, 2021 and september 29TH, 2026?establish a one-health platform to investigate, respond to, mitigate and monitor the impact of control strategies between september 30TH, 2021 and september 29TH, 2026.?programmatically manage the project to achieve the set objectives, including administrative and financial management; and ensure mutual sustainable collaboration with the US CDC and other related partners. The following expected short and long term outcomes would be achieved on the project: ?published revised niss protocol covering both avian and pandemic influenza surveillance?regularly updated standard operation procedures (sops) for all fields, sentinel sites, ncdc surveillance and niss lab network?established influenza lab networks?efficient sormas data management system for influenza?interoperable animal and public health data and information sharing?regular and mutual one-health meeting on influenza?regularly revised and updated national pandemic influenza preparedness (npip) plan?efficient monitoring and evaluation mechanism for the project?s progress?efficient procurement of reagents, consumables and all medical supplies and countermeasures required for niss management and npip response; and efficient financial and administrative management system. ?finally, an influenza surveillance and response system with the capabilities to respond to avian, pandemic influenza and emerging respiratory high threat pathogens would have become well-established in nigeria.
