Description
Sexually transmitted infections (STI) surveillance network (ssun) cycle 5 - the sexually transmitted infections (STI) program at the new york city (NYC) department of health and mental hygiene proposes to participate in a comprehensive approach to sentinel and enhanced surveillance to address surveillance gaps in information regarding critical patient demographics, risk behaviors, provider information, clinical information, treatment, partner characteristics, and CO-occurring conditions among persons diagnosed and reported with STI; and to identify service gaps and opportunities for improvement. We will 1) implement protocol-based sentinel surveillance in the NYC sexual health clinics, including routine matches with HIV surveillance records and at least one patient survey ; 2) implement protocol-based, citywide, enhanced, case-based surveillance, including HIV registry matching and patient and provider interviews on a subset of cases ; 3) conduct multiple short-term activities to monitor consequences of STI to further strengthen overall surveillance efforts; and, 4) provide technical assistance to state and local STI surveillance staff. These activities will enable US to provide valuable information well beyond what is routinely transmitted to CDC, such as the geographic extent and social determinants of STI. These activities will also allow US to monitor trends in incidence, prevalence, and health care access among at-risk populations; monitor STI treatment and prevention services practices; and evaluate completeness, timeliness, and representativeness of surveillance data.
