About this award

This Cooperative Agreement award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Climate and Atmospheric Research program (CFDA 11.431) provides $960,000 to develop a prototype climate service system that will deliver information on climate-related risks to decision-makers across various sectors. The award period is from August 1, 2024 to July 31, 2028.

The proposed system will leverage existing infrastructure and new cloud-based platforms to provide climate observation, modeling, and prediction products and services. It aims to coordinate with other U.S. climate service providers and leverage existing information and collaboration structures to gather user requirements and inform the development of the prototype. The final system will focus on applying modeling and prediction capabilities to provide research and development, delivery, and testing of climate-related products for real-time and operational use by stakeholders facing risks from extreme precipitation, temperature, drought, and coastal flooding over a 30-50 year timeframe.

Description

In this proposal, the PIS outline development of a prototype (TRL 7) climate service to deliver information to decision makers from a specific set of sectors facing climate-related risks due to extreme precipitation, extreme temperature, drought variability, and coastal flooding. The target time frame is 30-50 years. The proposed plan includes: product development, service delivery, and USER engagement. IT envisages coordination with other, existing US service providers, leveraging existing information and collaboration structures (e.g. rcsd, RCC), to gather (USER) requirements and inform development. In particular, the products and delivery are defined in the framework of infrastructure as specified by a variety of asce guidelines. The final prototype system will be based on delivery of climate observation and projection products and services using existing infrastructure as well as new services that take advantage of cloud-based platforms and tools. Overall, the system focuses on the application of modeling and prediction systems to provide R & D capabilities, delivery, and testing of products for real-time and operational use.
