About this award

This $486,990.00 Cooperative Agreement was awarded by the Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Climate and Atmospheric Research (CFDA 11.431) federal grant program. The project aims to co-develop a transferable decision framework that communities can use to assess a broad set of outcomes regarding flood adaptation choices, such as grey and green infrastructure, building retrofits, and relocation. This effort brings together expertise from two climate adaptation partnerships and four frontline communities spanning the northern and southern sections of the Atlantic coast to address the complex challenges posed by rising sea levels, increased tide and storm surge flooding, and extreme precipitation. The award period runs from September 1, 2023 to August 31, 2026.

Description

Rising sea level is escalating the frequency and severity of tide and storm surge driven coastal flooding along the atlantic coast of the US, and worsening extreme precipitation increasingly compounds the flooding. Decision makers and communities face complex choices between adaptation strategies, such as grey and green infrastructure, building retrofits, and relocation. Frameworks that can help to assess a broad set of outcomes of flood adaptation choices are not yet available. Existing studies primarily examine avoided damages to real estate, whereas decision makers and communities are also concerned with effects on economies, equity, qualities of life, neighborhoods, ecosystems, and multiple climate risks. This project brings together interdisciplinary expertise from two climate adaptation partnerships, and four frontline communities which span the northern and southern sections of the atlantic coast, to CO-develop a transferable decision framework that communities can use to U
