Description

These moorings provide critical data used in regional models and environmental metrics. While these moorings have provided tens of thousands of ocean profiles over the years and have significantly shaped our understanding of puget sound today, their utility and reliability is limited by power-hungry systems and aging components that require frequent maintenance. Today, down-time of the moorings is significant, with the mooring team battling against aging parts and an inherently high-maintenance system. Furthermore, the significant power draw of the ORCA profiling winch system, combined with a limited supply of on-board battery power, means that during winter months, when daylight hours are short and when cold weather further degrades battery capacity, only one profile per day can be achieved by most moorings.
