About this award

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded a $750,000 cooperative agreement to the New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission through December 2027 under the Congressionally Identified Awards and Projects program (CFDA #11.469).

The award will support several elements of an environmental monitoring network in Lake Champlain, including improved understanding of contaminants of concern through targeted sampling and development of a future monitoring framework. It will also fund cyanotoxin testing of recreational water samples to enhance understanding of public health risks from cyanobacteria blooms. Real-time in-situ monitoring instrumentation will increase data resolution for environmental condition and trend analysis across lake regions. Products and services under this cooperative agreement will enhance the scientific understanding and management of environmental issues in Lake Champlain.

Description

This NOAA-funded work will support several elements of a lake-wide monitoring network to collect and record lake champlain environmental data in real-time and to explore and develop monitoring programs to address new issues. The work will support four primary monitoring needs for lake champlain with FY22 funds: 1) improved understanding of environmental contaminants of concern in lake champlain through a literature review, targeted sampling, and the development of a future monitoring program framework will inform management decisions and direct resources toward addressing sources and effects of these contaminants. 2) cyanotoxin testing for recreational water samples will improve our understanding of public health risks and improve our communication on cyanobacteria blooms to lake users and stakeholders. 3) in-situ real-time monitoring instrumentation will increase the data resolution for environmental condition and trend analysis and provide useful comparisons of lake regions
