About this award
The Hudson River Park Trust was awarded a $750,000 Cooperative Agreement from the Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Congressionally Identified Awards and Projects program (CFDA 11.469). The funding supports a four-year community monitoring project to assess the efficacy and environmental impacts of the Gansevoort Peninsula Habitat Enhancement Project. The project will conduct rigorous field research on oyster health, estuarine ecosystems, water quality, and salt marsh conditions. It will also develop an education curriculum to engage students, interns and volunteers in project sampling and analysis, helping participants develop technical STEAM skills and strengthen training protocols.
Description
The hudson river trust is receiving $750,000 to support a community project focused on a four-year monitoring plan to assess the efficacy and effects of the gansevoort peninsula habitat enhancement project through rigorous field sampling focused on three research areas: 1) oyster health & performance, 2) estuarine community utilization & water quality, and 3) salt marsh condition. These research areas align and may be compared with ongoing monitoring of the analogous tribeca habitat enhancement project. Because of the uncharacteristic accessibility of this enhancement site and the park's commitment to education and community engagement, this project will also develop an education curriculum and leverage the park's science leadership program to thoughtfully include students, interns and volunteers in project sampling and analysis. This community engagement arm will help participants hone technical steam skills, strengthen training protocols and quality assurance for shoreline
