Description

The hawaii department of land and natural resources is recommended to receive $2.1M to advance coastal stewardship of fisheries and coral reefs at sites on the hawaii island through the integrated efforts of community, state, federal, and non-governmental organizational partners. This project builds local capacity for effective science-based and community-supported coral reef management and restoration through the empowerment of local communities to CO-manage nearshore reefs and fisheries, and the development of in-situ expertise and EX-situ nursery facilities to increase the health, abundance, and resilience of hawaii's coral reefs. This project can serve as an incubator for coral reef restoration science and drive the innovation of in-water management strategies that are effective, scalable, culturally-appropriate, and locally-relevant.
