Cooperative Agreement L24AC00336
- This $110,000 Cooperative Agreement, awarded by the Bureau of Land Management (CFDA 15.245 - Plant Conservation and Restoration Management), supports a project to better understand and quantify the impacts of water harvesting structures and strategic grazing management on vegetation restoration in the Hatch and Mesilla Valley region of New Mexico. The key objectives are to develop a comprehensive restoration design and monitoring approach, and to work closely with ranchers to implement grazing...
- This $1,143,430 federal Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program (CFDA 47.070) is developing a National Integrated Watershed Evaluation Framework to improve water resource management across the United States. The University of Arizona is the prime awardee, with no planned sub-awards. The framework will integrate diverse hydrologic datasets, from ground-based observations to remote sensing, to provide a...
- The U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $351,057 Project Grant under the WaterSMART (Sustain and Manage America's Resources for Tomorrow) program to The Watershed Management Group, Inc. to develop a strategic plan to enhance groundwater recharge opportunities in the Lower Santa Cruz Watershed in Pima County, Arizona. This project will collaborate with Sky Island Alliance to survey springs, creeks, and arroyos, assess management needs, identify priority restoration...
- The National Audubon Society, Inc. has been awarded a $298,014 Project Grant from the Bureau of Reclamation's Cooperative Watershed Management Program (CFDA 15.554) to implement the 2024-2029 Lower Gila River Collaborative (LGRC) Strategic Action Plan over a three-year period from January 2025 to December 2027. The project aims to advance restoration of the Lower Gila River sub-watersheds in Maricopa County, Arizona by removing invasive tamarisk, planting native vegetation, creating public...
- This Project Grant award, funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Reclamation under the SECURE Water Act - Research Agreements program (CFDA 15.560), will examine the influence of whole valley-floor restoration on late summer baseflows in Meadow Creek, Oregon. The $116,505 award, effective August 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026, will use two complementary approaches: Developing a surface flow model (HEC-RAS-2D) linked with a groundwater flow model (FLOPY) to simulate pre-...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808) provides $145,400 to Colorado State University (CSU) to conduct research and monitoring activities related to riparian ecosystem restoration in the western United States. The key objectives include: Participating in the science team and working groups for Minute 323 of the U.S.-Mexico Water Treaty, which involves delivering water for active restoration of riparian sites in...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808) provides $140,000 to the University of Arizona from August 21, 2023 to August 20, 2025. The purpose is to improve forecasting of post-wildfire debris flow hazards in the Southwestern U.S., especially in Arizona. Key activities include: Collecting data from a recent post-fire debris flow event in Arizona to improve numerical models for forecasting debris flow...
- The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation awarded a Project Grant of $287,478 to the Aravaipa Watershed Conservation Alliance under the Cooperative Watershed Management Program (CFDA 15.554). The funding will support the Alliance's efforts to complete group development, update their existing watershed restoration plan, and design projects that address critical watershed issues of erosion control, water conservation, and riparian area conservation in the Aravaipa Creek watershed in southeastern Arizona. The...
- This $300,000 Project Grant award from the Bureau of Reclamation's Cooperative Watershed Management Program (CFDA 15.554) supports the Headwaters of the Colorado (HOC) Initiative, a multi-stakeholder collaboration focused on building resilient and functioning forested headwaters within the Little Snake and Yampa watersheds in Wyoming and Colorado. The funding will enable the HOC partnership, which includes federal and state land management agencies, private landowners, and local community...
- This $113,218 Cooperative Agreement award from the Department of the Interior's U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), under the USGS Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808), will support a project to address habitat restoration challenges in Hawaii. The primary objectives are to enhance innovation and success in forest restoration while also testing strategies to mitigate the impacts of intensified drought on restoration outcomes. The project plans to conduct a field experiment in the Kahuku...
THIS PROJECT INITIATES A THREE-PHASE WATERSHED RESTORATION PLAN, BEGINNING WITH A DETAILED WATERSHED ASSESSMENT (PHASE ONE), FOLLOWED BY THE IMPLEMENTATION OF HAND-BUILT EROSION CONTROL STRUCTURES (PHASE TWO), AND CONCLUDING WITH ONGOING MONITORING TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE RESTORATION EFFORTS (PHASE THREE). THIS PROJECT WILL SUPPORT A MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM, INCLUDING HYDROLOGISTS, RESTORATION SPECIALISTS, ECOLOGISTS, AND LAND MANAGEMENT EXPERTS, WHO WILL COLLABORATIVELY COMPLETE PHASE ONE. THE RESTORATION FIELD TEAM WILL CONDUCT EXTENSIVE FIELD SURVEYS WITHIN THE SEVEN SUBWATERSHEDS OF THE CIENEGA CREEK WATERSHED. THEY WILL IDENTIFY CURRENT EROSION AND SEDIMENTATION ISSUES AND DOCUMENT ALL AREAS FOR THE DEPLOYMENT OF HAND-BUILT EROSION CONTROL STRUCTURES IN THE FOLLOWING PHASE. THIS PROPOSAL ONLY SEEKS FUNDING TO IMPLEMENT PHASE ONE, WHICH LAYS THE GROUNDWORK FOR TARGETED AND EFFECTIVE RESTORATION IN PHASE TWO. THE PROJECTS INITIAL PHASE WILL PRODUCE DETAILED MAPPING OF EROSION SITES ACROSS THE SEVEN SUBWATERSHEDS, CULMINATING IN A COMPREHENSIVE GEODATABASE. THESE DATA WILL INFORM A STRATEGIZED DESIGN PLAN FOR THE NEXT PHASE OF RESTORATION AND A PROPOSAL FOR CONTINUED EFFORTS. A FINAL REPORT WILL PRIORITIZE INTERVENTION SITES TO IMPLEMENT EROSION CONTROL MEASURES, THEREBY STABILIZING LANDSCAPES, ENHANCING MOISTURE RETENTION, MAINTAINING WATER QUALITY, AND SUPPORTING THE RESILIENCE OF NATIVE HABITATS AND COMMUNITIES AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE.
