Description

We will employ spatial analyses and qualitative research in five hydrological basins in western oregon that burned in the 2020 labor day fires to 1. Identify, characterize, and assess the current social landscape for wildfire recovery support on nipf. We will map land ownerships, outline the administrative reach of support organizations, and identify thesocial and ecological factors influencing the challenges and opportunities for resilience in recovery on nipf.2. Identify, characterize, and assess the ecological landscape of nonindustrial private forestland. We will categorize the factors influencing landowner decisions to replant or not to replant trees, track land cover and canopy changes in the study area, and CO design replanting planning strategies for social and ecological resilience.3. Inform more responsive and forward thinking recovery effortsthrough CO produced, transferable, and actionable recommendations and tools. We will advance theoretical and applied understandings of red tape and administrative burden and produce practical recommendations and a toolbox for local government, recovery support organizations, and nipf owners to ensure our research efforts translate into applied solutions for a variety of stakeholders.3. Benefits the results of this project will lead to more effective delivery of post fire recovery support that increase nipf resilience to wildfire. Nipf are a critical component of the landscape matrix in communities adjacent to wildlands, and improved efficiencies and streamlined implementation of best practices for wildfire response on nipf will result in cascading benefitsthat facilitate more robust and long term community level resilience to wildfire. Project results will increase efficiencies for organizations and agencies delivering recovery support to nipf owners and develop actionable best practices for increasing wildfire resilience on nipf and in surrounding matrixed lands.
