Description
- Activities
- This project will develop predictive models of range shifts with climate change for one native plant species (paper birch) and one invasive species (common tansy) in minnesota, U.S.A. These predictive models will account for local adaptation across the range of each species by incorporating data from manipulative experiments that simulate climate change in four parts of minnesota. Data from those experiments will provide information on how genotypes from across the state respond to changes in temperature and precipitation that have been predicted under climate change. Predictive models will also account for the potential for species to migrate across landscapes that have been altered by human activity.deliverables and expected outcomes:this project will identify locations where range shifts could occur and where they might be limited by habitat fragmentation. In addition, the modeling framework will help to identify areas where habitat enhancements for connectivity could promote invasion. The project will provide detailed maps that forecast the distribution of suitable habitat for both paper birch and common tansy under different climate change scenarios. The project will also produce maps that identify geographic regions where migration potential strongly limits range shifts and where efforts to improve habitat connectivity will be most impactful.intended beneficiary(IES):the project will result in products that can be used directly by land managers at state and regional agencies. The results of this work will also be submitted to peer-reviewed journals for publication. The research will benefit from consultation with partners at the u. Of minnesota, the nature conservancy, and midwest climate adaptation science center tribal resilience liaisons.
