Description
- Activities
- The research involves gathering traditional knowledge from mvskoke elders about culturally significant species important for climate adaptation, such as the jaguar, american chestnut, and the alligator snapping turtle. The project will begin with a project orientation and focus group discussions with nine mvskoke IK-holders. During the group discussion, the recipient will elicit feedback on the project generally as well as species of interest to the participants. Following the project orientation, individual ethnographic interviews will be conducted with the same nine participants in the mvskoke language (opvnvkv). Interviews will explore traditional cultural knowledge on a suite of culturally significant, climate-vulnerable, management-relevant species. Focus group and interview data will be transcribed, translated, and analyzed to develop educational and academic products, as well as archived at the college of the muscogee nation (CMN).deliverables and expected outcomes:the project will produce several impactful outcomes, including a management report for the muscogee creek nation (MCN) that outlines practical applications of this knowledge, an ethnobiology manuscript investigating the historical presence of jaguars in the southeastern U.S., and educational materials for the college of the muscogee nation. Additionally, the project will develop a species distribution model to assess the suitability of southeastern habitats for jaguar recovery under future climate scenarios.intended beneficiary(IES):project beneficiaries include MCN resource managers, mvskoke language programs, and the mvskoke community more broadly. By bridging traditional ecological knowledge with modern scientific practices, the project will help foster a deep biocultural connection that strengthens the resilience of both the mvskoke community and the ecosystems they have historically stewarded.
- Subrecipient activities
- The university of oklahoma will subaward to the college of muscogee nation to jointly execute the research objectives of this project. The college of the muskogee nation (CMN) will assume primary responsibility for recruitment, data collection, and extension activities. They will also coordinate the translation and transcription process, including working with opvnvkv language experts at CMN and the muskogee language program, to produce transcripts for archiving and analysis.
