Description

Project title endangered streams understanding socio hydroecological misalignments to inform development of environmental flows in the southwestern usaproject dates 10 1 2022 through 9 30 2024AWARD purpose stream flow is directly tied to climate, and climate change is a threat to future aquatic flows in the southwestern US, mountain snow is a primary source of water feeding streams and rivers climate warming decreases snowpack, causes IT to melt earlier in the season, and causes more precipitation to fall as rain rather than snow all of these can change the timing and amount of water flowing in aquatic ecosystems the goal of the project is to synthesize existing research and management plans to identify misalignments between aquatic flows and management strategies that support them to better define environmental flows as climate changes the work will inform adaptation strategies to support healthy aquatic ecosystems for wildlife and human well being activities to be performed the goal of the proposed project is to synthesize existing research and management plans to identify misalignments between aquatic flows and management strategies that support them to better define environmental flows as climate changes the project team will work with stakeholders to study ideas surrounding issues of environmental flows and to identify common themes and potential misaligning themes the research will include a systematic literature search for publications related to climate change, adaptation strategies, and environmental flows in the southwest climate adaptation science center SW casc region the literature search will include climate adaptation plans and environmental flow aquatic habitat plans from federal, state, and local agencies the documents will undergo a thematic analysis and coding scheme sankey plots will be used to reveal misalignments between environmental flows and potential adaptation strategies deliverables and expected outcomes dataset and associated metadata gleaned from coding of stakeholder documents will be made publicly available one or more peer reviewed manuscripts synthesizing research at the regional scale will be submitted for publication one or more peer reviewed manuscripts resulting from synthesizing research at the national scale will also be submitted for publication one or more public facing documents to engage research managers will also be developed examples of such include, but are not limited to, blog posts, story maps, webinars, and or fact sheets intended beneficiary IES research products are intended to benefit water resources professionals in the SW casc region the research is intended to add new knowledge to freshwater science through synthesis subrecipient activities N a
