About this award
This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the Endangered Species Recovery Implementation program (CFDA 15.657) provides $673,655 over 10 years to support the identification of climate-resilient plant translocations and maintain ex situ collections for future translocations in Hawaii.
The key objectives are to: 1) provide propagules for experimental plant translocations, and 2) conduct research on cryopreservation techniques to enable long-term storage of germplasm, especially for Hawaiian threatened and endangered plant species that cannot be stored conventionally in seed banks. The project will identify plant species suitable for site selection testing and develop methods to preserve germplasm to support future translocations of climate-resilient plant populations.
Description
The goal of the project is to support identification of climate resilient translocations by providing propagules for experimental translocations and by conducting research to maintain EX situ collections for future translocations. During this five year project certain species will be identified for site selection testing. Cryopreservation research will be conducted to determine how best to store germsplasm especially for species that cannot be stored conventionally in seed banks. This will identify how to store hawaiian threatened and endangered plants that currently do not have long-term germplasm techniques identified.
