Description

The endangered kiwiku (maui parrotbill, pseudonestor xanthophrys) and kohekohe (palmeria doeli) are of special concern. The most promising strategy for managing avian malaria is mosquito population suppression via the incompatible insect technique (IIT). The maui forest bird recovery project, along with the state of hawaii, US national park service, the nature conservancy and the US fish and wildlife service are part of the birds not mosquitos multiagency partnership advancing IIT in the state of hawaii to prevent further extinction of forest birds in hawaii. The first IIT deployment on maui began in 2024 with BI-weekly releases of approximately 250,000 incompatible male mosquitoes. Here we propose to continue to implement the IIT (deployment monitoring) of incompatible male mosquitoes at specified locations on the island of maui to reduce the overall population of wild culex mosquitoes known to vector avian malaria.
