ANCHORAGE SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT IS COORDINATING THE DEVELOPMENT OF 5 SMALL-SCALE LOCAL NATIVE PLANT NURSERIES IN PARTNERSHIP WITH WASILLA SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT, PALMER SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT, KNIK TRIBAL CONSERVATION DISTRICT, AND EKLUTNA TRIBAL CONSERVATION DISTRICT. ADDITIONAL PARTNERS AND VOLUNTEERS INCLUDE GOVERNMENT HILL COMMUNITY MEMBERS, NATIVE PLANT SOCIETY MEMBERS, AND DISTRICT BOARD MEMBERS. EACH OF THE 5 LOCATIONS WILL HAVE ITS OWN UNIQUE SET UP AND MAY INVESTIGATE DIFFERENT PROPAGATION METHODS, GERMINATION TECHNIQUES, OR NATIVE PLANT SPECIES TO GROW. FOR YEAR 1, THE PARTNERSHIP HAS SELECTED 6 ALASKA NATIVE PLANT SPECIES OF CONSERVATION VALUE TO BEGIN GROWING FOR THE EVENTUAL END USE IN ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION PROJECTS THROUGHOUT SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA. A PART TIME PROJECT MANAGER HAS BEEN HIRED BY ANCHORAGE SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT TO COORDINATE BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT LOCATIONS AND PARTNERS. THE PLANT MATERIALS CENTER HAS AGREED TO GERMINATE THE PLANTS FOR US AS WE BUILD OUT THE NURSERIES. ADF G, USFWS, CHUGACH NF, AND OTHER AGENCY PARTNERS ALL SUPPORT THE PROGRAM AND ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO HAVING NATIVE PLANTS TO USE IN CONSERVATION PROJECTS. HAVING THESE PLANTS TO DIVERSIFY PLANTINGS WILL BE OF TREMENDOUS BENEFIT FOR THE CONSERVATION OF TRUST SPECIES AND ECOSYSTEM FUNCTIONS.
