About this award

The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California was awarded a $392,779 Cooperative Agreement by the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 8 under the Fish and Wildlife Management Assistance program (CFDA 15.608). The 5-year award, which began on August 1, 2023, aims to facilitate greater participation by the Tribe in setting priorities for implementing the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act and overseeing restoration efforts in the Lake Tahoe watershed, particularly related to the management of aquatic invasive species and reintroduction of the Lahontan cutthroat trout. As a federally recognized Indian tribe, the Washoe Tribe has a long history of managing the Lake Tahoe watershed and has much to contribute to these critical environmental initiatives. The award will enable the Tribe, doing business as the Washoe Development Group, to play a more active role in the Act's implementation and watershed restoration activities.

Description

Lake tahoe is the heart of the tribe S aboriginal property and is the tribe S traditional summer home (i.e., traditional cultural property). Although named in the lake tahoe restoration act (the act), the tribe has had the least amount of involvement among the listed organizations in setting priorities for implementing the act. This situation is unfortunate because the tribe has much to contribute with a far longer and more successful tenure of managing the lake tahoe watershed than any other organization named in the act. In recent decades, changing attitudes and assumptions about tahoe S environment have both enshrined and desecrated its landscape (lake tahoe watershed assessment). The spread and control of aquatic invasive species (AIS) and the extirpation and reintroduction of lahontan cutthroat trout (LCT) are emblematic of these changes. This project proposal is to facilitate more active participation of the tribe in setting the priorities for the implementation of the act and overseeing restoration efforts in the lake tahoe watershed, especially, related to AIS and LCT.
