Description

This work will help conserve polar bears by reducing conflicts between polar bears and humans through implementation of a polar bear deterrence program (polar bear patrols) in the north slope communities of utqiagvik (formerly barrow), kaktovik, nuiqsut (cross island), point hope, point lay and wainwright. This involves hiring and training village residents to be responsible for early detection of polar bears, conducting vehicle-based patrols, hazing (DETERRING) bears as appropriate, encouraging attractants management, and reporting on patrol activities.
