Description

The share the beach program is a public outreach campaign aimed at increasing public understanding of local beach ecosystems, and community support for the protection of native wildlife, including the threatened western snowy plover (plover). Friends of the dunes will work together with the western snowy plover recovery unit 2 outreach subcommittee to train, hire, and supervise share the beach docents. Share the beach docents will conduct education and community outreach for plovers on selected beaches in humboldt county, california on weekends and high visitor use times during the 2023 and 2024 plover breeding season. The crumb clean campaign was originally developed to help protect the federally threatened marbled murrelet. During the original development, multiple interpretive materials were created to educate the public about human behaviors that attract murrelet predators and what visitors could do to protect the birds. California state parks is initiating the redesign of the original crumb clean campaign educational materials. Redesigned versions will inform the public about how they can help protect plovers by reducing human-influenced corvid (e.g., ravens and crows) attractants. Once draft materials are produced, friends of the dunes will conduct a social survey to get public feedback to assess messaging effectiveness.
