Description
As the only breeding facility for endangered hawaiian birds on the island of maui, the maui bird conservation center mbcc is an important resource for both natural and human communities, providing a unique opportunity to connect the community with these otherwise difficult-to-see species. To initiate this community engagement program while simultaneously recovering endangered hawaiian birds, construction, renovation, and establishment of infrastructure at the maui bird conservation center are needed. Funding is anticipated to be used for the following activities. Two accessible education aviaries for alala and hawaiian honeycreeper will be built, which will require cutting and clearing non-native trees. Education aviaries will allow the community to easily see, connect with, and learn about hawaiian birds. These education aviaries will be located away from existing breeding areas to avoid disturbing birds in the breeding program. In addition, activities are planned to include cut and clear non-native trees to create sites for the community to plant native plants as part of service-learning activities install a perimeter fence around the property to prevent invasive deer from browsing on native plants replace roof shingles on the entry room building due to ongoing leaking renovate and refurbish the entry room to make IT more welcoming, comfortable, and better suited for engaging experiences for visiting community members and build an outdoor covered area for visitors to observe and connect with the environment. Once the infrastructure is established, the maui bird conservation center will be better able to involve and connect local residents with the restoration of both hawaiian birds and forests, and will become an inspiration and catalyst for hawaii residents to embrace, preserve, and restore hawaiian species on their island home. Objectives 1 complete infrastructure renovations and construction at mbcc by september 30, 2025
